‘Grown not flown’

Why I don’t work with imported flowers

When I made my first few trips to the flower markets (very naive, very excited, very much feeling like a pleb among a sea of seasoned florists), I found it quite overwhelming and wondered where everything had come from. I began researching and was surprised to find how many flowers are imported, and what is involved in that process.

After reading about the serious ethical and environmental issues involved, as well as the negative impact on Australian growers, it was a very easy and natural decision for me to go local.

As it happens, I am very blessed to live near several flower farms. I absolutely love knowing exactly where all my flowers have come from, and knowing the people who grew them. I think it makes each creation that much more unique.

Seasonal Flowers

Choosing locally grown flowers goes hand-in-hand with working with what’s in season. This means I can’t click my fingers and produce everybody’s favourite peonies at any time of the year (these generally grow for around 5 weeks Nov/Dec time).

But better than that, I take the overall colour palette and style you’re dreaming of, find the best blooms of the season, and design something completely unique, never to be replicated again. Each season brings with it new and exciting gifts of unique flowers, colours and foliage, so nothing is ever boring!

Working exclusively with what’s in season also results in arrangements that feel and look cohesive within the surrounding environment - they look like they ‘belong’.

Honouring the essence of the seasons in my designs makes for a constant adventure, connecting me and those I create for to the beautiful rhythms of nature.
